Kreatin wird vom Körper für die anaerobe (ohne Sauerstoff) Energiebereitstellung in den ersten ungefähr 45 Sekunden einer Belastung verwendet, weshalb es besonders bei Kraftsportlern sehr beliebt ist. Bis zu einem bestimmten Grad kann der Körper Kreatin auch selber synthetisieren, dies ist für die positiven Effekte allerdings nicht ausreichend.

Die Supplementierung erhöht den Muskelkreatingehalt, wodurch die Leistungsfähigkeit auch zunimmt. Des Weiteren wird der intrazelluläre Wassergehalt, sprich der Wassergehalt in den Muskelzellen, erhöht, in Folge dessen auch das Muskelvolumen zunimmt. Aus demselben Grund geschieht auch eine Zunahme des Körpergewichts durch das zusätzliche Wasser in den Zellen.
